How to Perform Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

OMT consists of exercises targeting the tongue, soft palate, and throat muscles:

Tongue Exercises

  • Tongue Press: Press entire tongue firmly against roof of mouth, hold 5-10 seconds, repeat 10-20 times
  • Tongue Slide: Slide tongue backward along palate while pressing up

Soft Palate Exercises

Perform entire routine once or twice daily for best results.

Evidence Summary

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) has systematic-review level evidence showing improvements in AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index) and daytime sleepiness in adults with mild-to-moderate OSA. Multiple RCTs demonstrate 30-50% reductions in AHI with consistent daily practice over 8-12 weeks.

Evidence Type: Meta-analysis / Systematic Review

💪

Health Benefits

Reduces sleep apnea severity. Improves sleep quality and daytime alertness. Decreases snoring. May reduce cardiovascular risks associated with untreated OSA.

Cosmetic Benefits

May slightly improve jawline definition through improved tongue posture. Can reduce mouth breathing appearance.

⚙️

How It Works

Strengthens upper airway dilator muscles (especially genioglossus), improves tongue posture and tone, reduces pharyngeal collapsibility during sleep.

⚠️

Contraindications & Safety
